Top Ten Tuesday- Top Ten Books To Read If You Are In The Mood For Book/Movie Comparing

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme hosted here at The Broke and the Bookish. The topic for this week is Top Ten Books To Read If You Are In The Mood For X.

I chose to do top ten books to read if you are in the mood for book/movie comparing because that's one of my favorite things to do! All of these books have a movie adaptation so you can read the book then watch the movie. Or the opposite. Whatever you like to do! Personally I love to read the book first and then watch the movie and analyze everything. While I may complain at times about how a book was way better than the movie (90% of the time), I still enjoy seeing books brought to life. So here's my top ten books to read and watch the movie then compare the two!

1. I am Legend By: Richard Matheson

So of course I would say that a lot of these are better than the movie, but let me tell you WHY this one is even crazier. The book is pretty different! I don't want to give away spoilers, but let me just say this book isn't just about survival like the movie makes it out to be. While the movie is only entertaining, the book has a lot more to offer and the ending twist is one of my all time favorites. It really makes you think.

2. It/Misery/Carrie/Pet Sematary/The Shining or anything else By: Stephen King

*Angel Erin bows down to the master* All of SK's books/movies are fun to compare. I couldn't pick just one!

3. Harry Potter Series By: J.K. Rowling

Well I'm sure by now that most of us have already read/watched all of this series. However, I'm putting it on the list anyway because it's just so darn fun to compare these books to the movies and overall it's really well done. Even if there is a part or two in the movies that really makes me angry.

4. Lord of the Rings By: J.R.R. Tolkien

This one is a fun one to compare with the movies, but really both are so epic I have a hard time trying to compare them. I may have to re-read and re-watch soon!

5. To Kill A Mockingbird By: Harper Lee

The movie for TKAM is so well done! I love comparing this one. Also, R.I.P. Harper Lee. :'(

6. Romeo and Juliet By: William Shakespeare

Even though Leo makes me all swoony in the newer version of the movie I still try to focus so I can compare this one.

7. Jaws By: Peter Benchley

Duh na duh na duh na....After watching this movie since I was a kid I really thought the book would be crap. It's not! I didn't even know there was a book until a few years back and it's actually worth the read.

8. The Great Gatsby By: F. Scott Fitzgerald

More Leo swooning.

9. Interview with the Vampire By: Anne Rice

I finally read this one a few years back and I had a fun time comparing it with the movie. Now I need to finish the rest of this series sometime. :D

10. The Help By: Kathryn Stockett

Read the book and watch the movie, but don't eat the pie.

Those are just a few of my favorite book to movie comparisons, what are some of yours? Are you as into analyzing them as I am? :P

*NOTE* All of the covers have links to Goodreads. I'm trying to add that every time, unless you see an "Add to Goodreads" button.

  1. What a fun topic choice! I love King's movies and books but it seems like the older I've gotten the bigger chicken that I've become. :P

I loved both the book The Help and the movie. One of the best film adaptation I thought.

    1. I agree, The Help was an amazing film adaptation! The actors did a fabulous job in that one. :)

  2. I am Legend the movie FREAKED me out!! I guess I have a thing with zombies giving me nightmares, but that one really got to me!! The book has me so curious because I've heard it's very different w. a different ending and focus and everything. I was very disturbed by the movie's ending for sure.

    1. Oh definitely read the book then! It's MUCH BETTER. :D It's even more disturbing in my opinion. :)

    1. Oh my! You have been under a rock! :) It's not a good as the book (as most are ha), but still worth a watch for sure. If you get a chance to watch it I hope you like it. And thanks for following. :D

  4. I always like to read the book first and then watch the movie. But usually I'm whining about them not including scenes that were my favorite parts from the book. I watched and then read Cugo by Stephen King and that movie/book still bothers me to this day. I thought there would be a happy ending since I was young and ignorant. Lesson learned lol.
The only one where I thought the movie was so much better than the book was The Princess Bride. :)

    1. I love to read the book first as well. Sometimes that doesn't happen, but it's my preference. Cujo made me so scared of big dogs as a kid! That movie was really well done.

    2. Yes, exactly! And I even grew up with big dogs - dobermans. One time when I was out roller skating they protected me from another doberman that was trying to attack me. So that just added to my fear on top of the book and movie. Ack!

    3. Oh wow that is so cool that they protected you! I'm scared to death of dobermans. I'm okay with other big dogs now that I'm an adult, but dobermans terrify me. LOL!

    4. Yes, I was so grateful that they were with me! Dobermans are actually huge lap dogs that like to cuddle. They don't look like they would, but they do. It's a little ridiculous lol.

    5. That's good to know! They just look so darn scary lol.

  5. I really can't think of too many King books where the movie was at least as good as the book. I think they did a good job with The Shining, and the original Carrie was pretty good. Storm of the Century was a good mini-series, and I think the book was only a screenplay so I found it troublesome to read. I have read I Am Legend a long time ago and for some reason, can only remember the movie ending, not the book - how sad. Great list!

    1. There are a lot that are as good as the books, but there are quite a few that weren't the best as well. And don't even get me started on the Under the Dome show. Lol!

    2. How true. I even forgot that one. I only watched Season 1 and a few episodes of Season 2 before I quit - and my husband always hated it!

    3. That's how far I got as well! Once Season 2 started I really lost interest.

  6. Nice topic this week!! Some of the books you've mentioned above I've had the chance to read both the book and see the movie.... While in other cases, I've either only read the book or seen the movie.

  9. Fun! I love these! I thought The Help, HP and Jaws are all great adaptations! My favorite of all time is The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides -- Sophia Coppola did an amazing job with the movie -- the setting, colors, music and casting were so perfect!!

    1. I've seen The Virgin Suicides movie years ago, but I haven't read the book yet. That's good to know that they did a good job on it! :)

  10. This is a great list this week! LotR of course LOL- the books and the movies are so good. The Narnia books come to mind too, although to be honest some of the books in that series didn't really work for me, but I was young. :) Oh and have you seen Maximum Overdrive? It's SO bad but kinda fun even so... as long as you don't expect much LOL. I think it's based on a short story...

  11. Great choice of topic ! Like you, most of the time I have so many critique about how they translated the story of the book to the movie.. But I still want to see how they did it. AND sometimes, when they have done a good job, it is very much worth it :)
Ohh and I love most of those !! How many times I;ve watched Interview with the Vampire ^^
