DNF- #1

I decided when I started my blog to try not to post reviews for books that I have DNF'd. That doesn't mean that I never will post a review for a book I didn't finish, but it would just have to be a special circumstance. Personally I don't like to do a full review on a book that I didn't finish. However, I decided I didn't want to just leave the DNF'd books off my blog completely. So I've decided to start adding in DNF posts here and there to let you know which books I have had to DNF.

I try really hard to finish every book I start. I really hate not completing a book I've started. Every time I do DNF it makes me cringe, but there are so many wonderful books out there. If I'm really not enjoying one and I think there is no way it can be redeemed then sometimes I just have to move on. Here are the two books so far this year that I have not finished-

Lamb By: Christopher Moore

I was really excited to start reading Lamb since I have heard so many wonderful things about it. I haven't read a Christopher Moore book before and I wanted to read this one for the Humor genre in the Insane Genre Challenge. However, this one just was not for me. I got about 17-20% in and I did not find it funny and I would find myself doing anything else just to avoid reading this. I really did not want to DNF it since I had picked it for one of the genres in my challenge, but I decided (after trying to read it for most of February) on this one I will just have to pick another book.

First & Then By: Emma Mills

I am very surprised that I had to DNF First & Then. I was really looking forward to reading this one and I even won this book in another blogger's giveaway! I love the cover and the summary sounded fantastic, but when I started to read it I just wasn't interested. For me this book was dull, dull, and dull. I have since donated it to the trading box we have in my IRL YA book club.  Maybe someone else will enjoy it!

So those are the books that I have DNF'd so far in 2016. Have you DNF'd any books so far this year? Which books?

Does anyone else cringe when DNFing a book?

  1. I don't usually like to review DNF's either but I also think it can be good to explain why a book didn't work, it might help other people know if it's for them or not. One person's DNF is anothers gem. :) Well, maybe... ha ha. Seriously though, yeah sometimes a book just doesn't click and you have to move on. :)

    1. So true! Which is why I decided to start this. In the future I plan to be more detailed about what I didn't like as well. And also true, about one persons DNF. Sometimes I see people DNF books that I love and I'm sure there are people that love ones that I DNF! Right? Sometimes it's best to just move on to a new book. :D

  2. I tend to mark books as DNF on my Goodreads bookshelf and state the reasons why I stopped. Sometimes its me, or I couldn't connect with the protagonist.

    1. That's how it goes sometimes. Sometimes a book just isn't for me.

  3. I hate DNFing a book as well, but sometimes it's for the best. Why suffer through a book when you can be having fun enjoying another? I was really excited to read First & Then but after seeing that you DNF'd it I will put it on the back burner. BTW, I have one book on my DNF so far this year. It's The Reluctant Duchess by Sharon Cullen. I tried so very hard but couldn't get into it.

    1. Right? That's how I feel. There are so many good books out there, why waste time being miserable trying to read one? Well when you read First & Then I hope you like it. It just wasn't for me. 1 DNF so far this year isn't bad at all! :D

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, YOU DNF'D FIRST & THEN NOOOOOOOO, ERIN ERIN ERIN. O_O I loved it! I'm not a YA contemporary fan, but I adored the book so much. Booooo. I hope you give it another chance? In any case, I'm sorry you couldn't finish!

Have a great week, Erin. :)

    1. Sorry, I didn't care for it! I probably won't try again, but I donated it to my book club so hopefully it will find a good home. LOL! I'm glad you liked it though. :D I hope you have a great week too! :D

  5. Oh no! :( I'm sad that you DNFed First & Then because I really liked it, but yeah, it was a little slow at first so I understand why you may have found it dull.

    1. I've heard some people love it and some others didn't like it as well. I hope you will enjoy it though! :) I say still give it a go because there are a lot of people that do like it.

  7. I started first and then and I just couldn't for the life of me get into it so I wound up returning it to the library and never going back to it. Sometimes you just gotta DNF.

  8. Lucky this year at least, there are no books I've not finished. Though I had quite a few last year.... I'm with you! I hate not finishing a book. Even if it's not the best I try to finish every one.

    1. Zero so far is really great! Right? I feel like I need to try really hard to finish all the books I start. But sometimes it's just not for me. :)

  9. That's a bummer to hear about First & Then, but if it is a dull book then why continue wasting your time on something you won't enjoy. I need to get better at DNFing a book! I've only ever DNFed 1 book (Stained by Ella James) and I've suffered through too many 1 & 2 Starred books. Great post and a reminder that DNFing is perfectly fine to do. Thank you!

    1. So true, no need to keep suffering if it's just terrible for you. Yes DNFing is totally okay! I try to get a least a decent ways into the book, but sometimes you just know right away that it's not for you. I cringe when I have to DNF, but there are so many books out there that I want to read. Might as well move on to one that will be enjoyable. :D
