Burned By: Karen Marie Moning Review

Well let me preface this review by saying that I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority opinion about this book. The same with Iced, which I was pretty middle of the road about. Burned made me irrationally angry. Which I actually have rational reasons, but I only say irrational because it's irrational to be this upset about a book. Right?!

Irrational or not, I am very angry about this book. I took a bit of time before I even started writing this review because I was so upset after I finished it that I needed to calm down a bit. I'm sorry to those that did like this book, but I have to be honest. Burned was terrible. Here's a quick list of why I didn't like the novel:
  • It was all over the place with too many POVs in the beginning.
  • It had a very slow start for me.
  • I am not a Dani fan. After too much of her in Iced I could have done without her in this one.
  • The plot was so slow. Nothing important ever really happened till close to the end.
  • Then of course we get another cliffhanger. Seriously?
  • I HATED the "twist."
If you've read this series then I'm sure you know what twist I'm referencing. Not surprising that I hated it considering how I feel about some other things in the series. I'm just so darn disappointed! All I've heard since I started this series is how big the twist in this book is. Then I get to it and I feel so let down by it.

Now due to the cliffhanger at the end I'm not sure whether or not to read Feverborn. I really think for me that this series should have ended with Shadowfever.  However, the cliffhanger at the end of this one made me curious about that and also I would like to see if there will be more about Lor. I really liked Lor in this one! That's the only reason I gave this two stars instead of one star.

Gah! I'm just so pissed off that this book was so terrible! Also, it makes me even madder that because of the cliffhanger I may push on and read the next book. Grr.

Overall I'm incredibly disappointed by how downhill this series has gone. I really loved the first five books and if I look at just those then the series is one of my favorites. However, I do really seem to be in the minority about this one and Iced. So don't let my bad review steer you away if want to read this one!

I recommend Burned only for those who enjoyed Iced. I think if you disliked or were meh about Iced like I was, then you may be unhappy about this one.

  1. It sucks when the second book in series isn't good. Especially when theres so many other great books out there to read. Good Review!

    1. I agree! This one is actually the 7th, the first 5 were AMAAAAAAZING. At the 6th it really started to get bad for me though. :/ Have a great weekend!

  2. I never continued this series because of all the mixed reviews for Iced and now with this one. I'm glad I didn't end up getting these, I really don't think they would have been for me at all. I'm so sorry they didn't work for you either.

    1. I don't recommend it. I think I will just have to be done with this series. It's a shame when an author carries on with a series too long and it goes badly.

  3. I stopped this series after Shadowfever (which was a struggle) so I don't have much to offer re: this one or Iced but I felt super betrayed thinking the series was over and then for it to keep going on and, it seems, for no reason. Great, honest review!!

    1. I totally get that! I just feel like it should have ended there. I'm really thinking I'm going to have to be done with the series and pretend shadowfever was the last one. Lol. I would reread the first 5. Those alone are definitely favorites!

  4. Thank you SO much for this review! You just made me feel immensely better over a decision I made two days ago. I went and removed books 6-10 from my to-read list on Goodreads because I am not a Dani fan, at all. I LOVED books 1-5 and I don't want to suffer through time with Dani just to see my favorite characters from the first books lol. If you end up starting the next book, here's hoping it is a much better read!

    1. I'm so glad I'm not the only person who isn't a fan of Dani! I decided not to continue the series. I went and took 8-10 off my to-read list on Goodreads. I'm going to pretend that the series ends with book 5.

    2. Yes, I'm on board for pretending it ended at book 5! Sounds perfect to me!

    1. I still recommend this series, just not after book 5! LOL! I've heard her other series is great too. I think it's a highlander series or something. I'm not sure.

  6. Oy! Two stars, wow! I have never read any of this author's books, and honestly have no interest LOL. So sorry this book took a different turn compared to the others!

    Great review, Erin. =)

    1. Thanks! I hate when a series takes a turn for the worst, but it is what it is. At least the first 5 were great!

  7. Okay, so I'm thinking that I shouldn't start this series now. I know all series have at least one book that is a dud, but I've read negative reviews for 2 of them now. Sorry this sucked.

    1. Yeah this one was really awful. I recommend the first 5, but only those!
