Top Ten Tuesday- Top Ten Books I Read That Helped Open Me Up To New Genres

I'm back from vacation! Well I came back Sunday night, but I'm back to the blog today. I missed my blogger friends and I can't wait to see what posts I've missed! I'll be going around later today catching up on posts. :)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme hosted here at The Broke and the Bookish. The topic for this week is Top Ten Books I Read Recently That Weren't My Typical Genre.

So I decided to do my own little twist on this one and do my top ten books that helped open me up to new genres. When I was a kid I read horror and only horror. I eventually made my way into some new genres. I still have a few more to break into which is why the Insane Genre Challenge has been so great for me. I just love this topic and here are the books that really helped open me up to some new genres.

*Note: These may not be the FIRST books I read in the genre. They are the first ones that I really enjoyed in the genre enough to make me want to explore deeper in the genre.*

1. Guilty Pleasures By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy)

2. Locke & Key Vol. 1 By: Joe Hill (Graphic Novels)

3. Black Butler Vol. 1 By: Yana Toboso (Manga)

4. Twilight By: Stephenie Meyer (YA)

5. Malice By: Danielle Steel (Romance)

6. Ugly Love By: Colleen Hoover (NA)

7. Along Came A Spider By: James Patterson (Mystery/Thriller)

8. Dracula By: Bram Stoker (Gothic)

9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone By: J.K. Rowling (Fantasy)

10. My Sister's Keeper By: Jodi Picoult (Contemporary)

Honorable Mentions-

I didn't include these on the list since the Goosebumps books are what got me into reading anyway so it wasn't really a new genre. Same with The Giver since it was the first book I had to read at school that I actually enjoyed. So while they don't really count for my list I wanted to mention them since they started me on these genres.

Welcome to Dead House By: R.L. Stine (Horror)
The Giver By: Lois Lowry (Classics)

Are there any books that really helped open you up to new genres? If so, which books?

  1. Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite adult contemporary writers. You should check out some of her other stuff if you can! I also need to read Ugly Love.

  5. Oh you have some great books here! Guilty Pleasures was a good read for me, but I considered it horror/paranormal romance. It's a little dark! ;)
I'm so glad to see that Twilight opened you up to YA! Honestly in my teen years YA was blah but now it's so great, that is why I read so much of it now!

    1. It is dark! I love it. The series was so great, until the later books. :) Right? When I was a teen I only read adult books because the YA genre was practically nonexistent lol!

  6. It's funny how certain books stick with us, especially those that start our love of reading or introduce to genres we end up liking. Looks like a great list- I don't know most of these but they look very eclectic and interesting.

I like the cover of Ugly Love with the bubbles and everything, don't know what it's about but great cover. :)

  7. Great list! I think Twilight drove lots of readers to read more YA. It did for me, at least. Up until then, I was always reading adult fiction, and some middle grade books.

    1. I think Twilight did drive a lot of people to YA. I agree and whether people hate it or love it that doesn't matter. It paved the way for YA to explode!

  8. My Sister's Keeper is one of my favourite books, being adult contemporary, it was definitely out of my usual YA Fantasy/Dystopia comfort zone but I'm so glad I read it because I loved it so much and Jodi Picoult became one of my favourite authors after that.

    1. Jodi Picoult is great! Her books are pretty darn good. I wish they would do a good job on one of her movies at some point though. I'm always disappointed!

  10. What!? You've read Black Butler? I heard that manga is amazing! I've only read Attack on Titan and that makes me want to read more mangas, but I never decide which ones.
Sadly, I didn't have luck with NA books, so I don't read then anymore, but I gave them a chance thanks to CoHo!

    1. Yes! I love Black Butler. That's what got me into anime and reading the mangas. I still haven't watched many animes or read many mangas, but I like the ones that I have. Attack on Titan is one I want to watch and see if I like. I'm not huge into NA (I'm very picky about NA I think), but I love CoHo!

  11. Love your list! I read a Lisa Kleypas book about a year ago and it's what got me started on reading Historical Romance, I couldn't stand "regular" romance books, but after that I just fell in love with historical romance <3

  13. I also use to love R.L. Stine's books when I was younger! I still get creeped out thinking about some of those scenes, such as a hand and a garbage disposal. *shudders* I can't believe I read those because now I'm terrified of horror books lol!
I'm hoping to read Ugly Love in the next few months. It's been sitting on my coffee table for far too long. I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed it and it made you want to search out more NA titles!
