Well...this is 1 star from me. I really did not care for Code Name Verity, but I don't think it's a completely horrible book. There is a deep and moving story in here somewhere (in 10% of the book), but the book just isn't for me.
Before I started reading Code Name Verity I thought it was going to be a book with lots of action. That wasn't really the case here. Other than that, the reason that I didn't like this book is very simple to explain. I HATED that the whole book is about flying planes. MOST of the book! The author is a pilot herself and pretty much this book is a story about flying planes during World War Two. Secondary to that there is an actual plot, but it's pretty minor. I am not interested in flying airplanes in the slightest and reading about it nearly bored me to tears. I think there is a good story about friendship in here, but it's extremely hidden underneath the author's love of hearing herself talk about flying planes. I can't handle this huge amount of boring and unnecessary writing.
Airplanes, airplanes, airplanes. GAH!!!!!
Near the end there was one thing I did like a lot that happened, but it was too little too late to save the book. Honestly, the only reason why I even finished reading it is because it was the pick of the month for my IRL YA book club and also I chose it for the Espionage genre for the insane genre challenge. Looking at it now, I'm not even sure it counts as espionage. :(
Overall, this one was pretty painful for me. I wish I could have DNF'd it. I can't really recommend Code Name Verity to anyone, but I wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading it either. If you can handle really long-winded descriptions about flying aircrafts then you may enjoy this one more than I did. From what I've seen I'm in the minority about this book so you may like it!
