Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free ebook copy of The Breakdown By: B.A. Paris in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished reading Behind Closed Doors by this author very recently and I absolutely LOVED it. I gave that book 5 stars on Goodreads. So of course when I saw The Breakdown on NetGalley I knew I had to read it. Sadly, I did not enjoy this one as much.
The book started off great from page 1. The concept is very intriguing and the book is written well. My big complaint with The Breakdown is how easy and quick it is to call the twist. The fact that it is so obvious from very early on left me feeling a bit deflated when I got to the end. I think I felt this way even more so because the whole book seems to build up to the "big reveal" and none of it was shocking to me.
That's really my only complaint. Other than that the book is written well and throughout it did keep my interest. However, since I'm such a fan of thrillers I really have to have a good twist at the end that I did not guess. Otherwise I'm always left feeling like the book could have been way better.
Overall The Breakdown isn't a bad book at all and the writing really is phenomenal. I just despise calling the twist so early on in a novel. It really bums me out! If the twist and ending had been better I definitely would have given this 5 stars. Also, Cass did annoy me a tad bit because I feel like she was too oblivious about everything that was going on.
I'm not sure if I would recommend The Breakdown or not. I guess it's up to you on how much emphasis you put on the twist being a big surprise or not. I would definitely try the next book she puts out since I liked Behind Closed Doors so much.
